Everyone in my cohort thought I was literally mad 🫠
Everyone in my cohort thought I was literally mad 🫠
Now they wish they did the same lmao
I had a biochemistry degree from a great university. I was weeks away from a placement at GSK as a research scientist.
The 'right' path was right there.
Then COVID happened. The only placement I could get was in marketing. I took it even though I was PISSED.
and somewhere between the briefs and the campaigns and the content - I realised I actually loved it. Like, really loved it.
So I started freelancing in my final year. Building a client base while my coursemates were writing dissertations and applying to labs.
The judgment was instant and everywhere on campus
'You're wasting your degree.' 'Marketing is the easy way out.' 'You spent four years studying biochemistry for... that?'
I smiled and trusted in something bigger.
Then I landed my first wellness client. A supplement company. The founder sat me down to brief me on the product - started explaining the compounds, the mechanisms, the effects on the body.
I already knew. All of it. Better than he did hahaha
He stopped mid-sentence and asked how.
'My Bachelor's with Honours is in biochemistry.'
That was the moment. The penny didn't just drop - it fell through the mf'ing FLOOR
Because here's what most health and wellness brands are dealing with right now: - Their founders can't translate the science beyond surface - Their scientists are too busy or too shy to create content
And the marketers they hire don't know the difference between a bioavailable compound and a marketing buzzword.
I do.
I've filmed in hospitals. Interviewed doctors. Researched product formulations at 11pm to make sure a single carousel was 100% factually accurate before it went live.
I've worked with supplement brands, FemTech founders, MedTech companies, pet nutrition labs, healthcare brands, electrolytes, superfoods, beauty science - and not one piece of content has ever gone out without being approved by someone who's an official biochemist.
That someone is...
💁🏻♀️ moi 💁🏻♀️
The 'easy way out' turns out to be one of the sharpest competitive advantages in my industry.
I'm not just a marketer who understands your science.
I'm a biochemist who became a marketer - and that's a different thing entirely.
To everyone who laughed: the accidental placement year was the best thing that ever happened to me.
To my 18 year old self: I'm so proud of you for following your heart, look where we are!
